Following the mandatory implementation of daily newspaper reading for students in government schools by the state governments of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, the demand to introduce a similar system in Chandigarh has gained momentum.
Educational organisations and parents argue that this initiative will strengthen students' general knowledge, language skills, and understanding of contemporary issues. As per orders issued in other states, 10 minutes are dedicated daily during the morning assembly for reading national, international, sports, and major editorial news.
Additionally, five new words are introduced daily along with their meanings. A demand has been raised to implement a similar system in Chandigarh's government schools following this model.
Strengthening Language And Expression Skills
Education experts believe that reading newspapers strengthens students' command over language and improves their ability to express themselves. In the current era of mobile phones and social media, this initiative could prove highly effective in reconnecting children with serious reading and learning habits.
Demand For Both Hindi And English Newspapers
Proponents of the move suggest that at least two newspapers—one Hindi and one English—should be subscribed to in Chandigarh’s government senior secondary schools, while Hindi newspapers should be made mandatory in primary and upper primary schools. This will help students achieve proficiency in both languages.
Education Department Considering The Proposal
According to sources, the Chandigarh Education Department is considering this proposal. If implemented, it is expected to increase students' interest in news, helping them become more aware, thoughtful and confident citizens.
