In separate news, to alleviate traffic congestion at Chennai Port, a new parking plaza is set to open in the first week of March. The plaza, covering 84,000 square metres, will provide space for 550 vehicles.

Chennai Port handles a significant volume of cargo, with a reported 8.1 per cent increase in container traffic in 2023-2024. The daily influx of nearly 4,000 trailers has exacerbated congestion on the approach roads.

Port Trust officials stated that the need for a dedicated parking facility, stating that the absence of such a space led to haphazard parking, further contributing to congestion. The parking plaza, which cost approximately Rs 45 crore and took a year to complete, includes facilities like a dormitory, canteen, and restrooms for drivers.

Trial operations for the new plaza have commenced and will continue for 15 days before full operations begin. Officials anticipate that once operational, the plaza will significantly ease traffic flow at the port's entry and exit points.
