The arrival of summer worsened Dehradun's water crisis as several parts of Uttarakhand’s city are experiencing a shortage of drinking water. The Southern Water Institute Division, responsible for supplying water to areas including Dilaram Chowk, Jhanda Chowk and Dharampur zone, is facing significant challenges due to widespread pipeline leakages. Despite about 52,000 drinking water connections within the division, the inefficiency of floating valves in residential tanks is leading to continuous water wastage.

Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan is clamping down on water wastage by initiating a house-to-house inspection campaign to identify and address leakages. Households found with leaking water pipelines will receive a notice and failure to rectify the issue within 15 days will result in disconnection of their water supply.

The problem worsens as many household pipelines leak, causing water to spill onto the streets whenever the supply is turned on. Although departmental officials repeatedly urged residents to replace faulty valves and pipelines, there has been a lack of serious response from consumers.

Executive Engineer Ashish Bhatt emphasised the urgency of the situation, stating that daily inspections will be conducted to ensure compliance. The campaign aims to instil a sense of responsibility among consumers and prevent the unnecessary loss of water, which is especially critical during the summer months when water scarcity becomes more pronounced.

The initiative has been taken to conserve water and address the infrastructural issues that contribute to its wastage. As the water crisis deepens, the actions taken by Jal Sansthan and the Southern Water Institute Division will be crucial in safeguarding the vital resource for the residents of Dehradun.
