VK Shukla, New Delhi: Commuters travelling between Central, New Delhi, Outer Delhi, and West Delhi are set to get major relief from traffic congestion. The government has granted administrative approval and expenditure sanction to conduct a feasibility study to transform the seven-kilometre New Rohtak Road into an elevated corridor. The proposed route extends from the Rani Jhansi Road T-Point to the Punjabi Bagh West Metro Station via Anand Parvat and Zakhira.

Feasibility Study And Funding

The Public Works Department (PWD) has sanctioned Rs 35 million to hire consultancy services for a detailed feasibility study of this project. The study will examine traffic volumes, technical feasibility, and economic viability through 24-hour and week-long traffic surveys.

The agency will also evaluate alignment options, preliminary engineering designs, cost estimates, and traffic management plans to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The final length and design of the elevated route will be decided based on these findings.

Major Bottlenecks Along The Route

The entire seven-kilometre stretch currently has six red lights:

- Kamal T-Point / Liberty Cinema

- Anand Parvat

- Daya Basti/Sarai Rohilla Cut

- Indralok Metro Station Turn

- Ashok Park Main

- Punjabi Bagh Chowk / Ring Road Crossing

Due to these signals, a journey that should take 10 minutes regularly takes 25 to 30 minutes and up to 45 minutes during peak congestion. Multiple sections along this road are designated as important traffic corridors by the Delhi Traffic Police and local authorities.

Expanded Scope Of The Project

An earlier proposal from 2024 recommended a 2.2 km flyover connecting the Zakhira and Karampura flyovers. However, current planning considers that insufficient. By expanding the project's scope to cover the full seven-kilometre stretch, the government expects to provide traffic relief across several surrounding neighbourhoods, including Anand Parvat, Zakhira, Karampura, Moti Nagar, Punjabi Bagh, Janakpuri, and Uttam Nagar.
