Delhi IGI Airport Terminal 1: Passengers travelling through Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport will soon enjoy faster and more convenient access to Terminal 1, with the Delhi Metro set to construct a new 2.3-kilometre Aerocity-Terminal 1 Metro corridor. The project aims to significantly enhance airport connectivity and reduce the need for long walks or shuttle bus transfers between terminals.

The new stretch will serve as an extension of the Delhi Metro's Golden Line and is expected to transform the way passengers travel between airport terminals.

Terminal 1 to Become an Interchange Station

According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), Terminal 1 will be developed into an interchange station once the corridor is completed.

The station will connect directly with the Magenta Line, enabling passengers to seamlessly transfer between different airport terminals using the Delhi Metro network. This integration is expected to make airport travel more efficient and convenient for both domestic and international passengers.

Aerocity to Emerge as a Major Transit Hub

With the addition of the new corridor, Aerocity Metro Station will be upgraded into a major multimodal transit hub. The station will integrate three major transit networks:

  • Airport Express Line (Orange Line)
  • Golden Line (Line 10)
  • Proposed Delhi-SNB-Alwar RRTS corridor

This integration is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Delhi, the airport, and surrounding regions.

Golden Line Project Progress

The Delhi Metro's Golden Line (Line 10) spans approximately 26 kilometres between Delhi Aerocity and Tughlakabad. Being developed as part of Delhi Metro's Phase 4 expansion, the fully driverless corridor will feature 15 stations, including 11 underground and four elevated stations.

The line is designed to strengthen connectivity across South Delhi while providing better access to IGI Airport.

According to DMRC, nearly 73 per cent of the overall project work has already been completed. Officials expect construction to be finished and the corridor to open to the public by the end of 2026.

No More Need for Shuttle Buses

Currently, passengers travelling between Terminal 1 and other airport terminals rely on shuttle bus services that operate at roughly 20-minute intervals.

Once the new metro link becomes operational, passengers will be able to transfer between domestic and international terminals directly via the Delhi Metro network, eliminating the need for shuttle bus transfers.

290-Metre-Long Platform Planned

To handle growing passenger volumes, the Golden Line platform at Aerocity Station will be extended to 290 metres.

This will make it approximately 30 metres longer than a standard interchange station platform, allowing greater passenger capacity and smoother operations during peak travel periods.

When Will the Aerocity-Terminal 1 Corridor Open?

The entire 2.3-kilometre Aerocity-Terminal 1 corridor will be constructed underground, with its design tailored to meet airport security requirements.

According to officials, the project is expected to be completed by December 2028. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve airport accessibility, reduce travel time between terminals, and provide seamless metro connectivity across all IGI Airport terminals.
