What Are E-Passports: The Ministry of External The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced the successful launch of the e-Passport for Indian citizens. The MEA emphasised that the roll-out of the e-Passport, alongside PSP V2.0, marks a significant milestone for the country.

To enhance the security and functionality of the passport system, the Government of India has introduced the e-Passport. The application process has also been made considerably easier. If you have obtained a new passport or renewed your old passport on or after 28th May 2025, you will now receive an e-Passport.

Although this passport may appear similar to the previous version, it includes a special electronic chip beneath the Ashoka emblem on the cover. This chip is the key feature that makes the e-Passport much more secure.

What is an e-Passport?

An e-Passport is a digital, high-security version of the traditional passport. The embedded electronic chip stores vital information about the passport holder, including biometric data, the holder’s photograph, fingerprints, and personal details.

This chip ensures the passport is extremely difficult to tamper with or counterfeit. Additionally, e-Passports facilitate faster immigration checks compared to traditional passports.

How Long Does It Take to Receive an e-Passport?

On the day of your appointment, remember to bring all the required original documents. You will need to visit the Passport Seva Kendra or the Regional Passport Office for the physical verification process. In some areas, passport vans may also be available to carry out document verification at your home.

After the physical verification, a police verification will take place. Once all the steps are completed, your e-Passport is usually delivered to your home address within 15 to 20 days.

How to Apply for an E-Passport? 

The e-Passport offers enhanced security to prevent document fraud. Follow these steps to apply:

Step 1: Visit the official Passport Seva website.

Step 2: Register as a new user or log into your existing account.

Step 3: Fill in the e-passport application form.

Step 4: Schedule an appointment at the Passport Seva Kendra or the Post Office Passport Seva Kendra.

Step 5: Pay the fee online.

Step 6: Visit the selected center on your appointment date for document verification and biometric data capture.

What Documents Are Required For An E-Passport?

- Proof of address (such as Aadhaar or a utility bill)

- Proof of date of birth (such as PAN card or birth certificate)
