Weather Update: A severe heatwave continues to grip North India. Uttar Pradesh's Banda district was ranked among the world's hottest cities for the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday, recording a maximum temperature of 48 degrees Celsius, 4.5 degrees above normal.

In response, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for several parts of North India, forecasting a gradual rise in maximum temperatures over the next few days. Residents have been advised to take necessary precautions, exercise caution, and closely follow official weather updates to minimise inconvenience.

Delhi Weather Update

The national capital remained in the grip of a severe heatwave on Wednesday, with the maximum temperature hovering around 45 degrees Celsius.

The weather office has issued an orange alert for Thursday, May 21. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 46 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will settle around 26 degrees Celsius.

Severe Heatwave Tightens Grip On Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh's Banda district was ranked among the world's hottest cities for the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday, recording a maximum temperature of 48 degrees Celsius.

In view of this, the Regional Meteorological Department has issued a severe heatwave alert for several locations for the next week. The weather office has issued a yellow alert for the next three days, followed by an orange alert, warning of heatwave to severe heatwave conditions and warm nights.

Speaking to news agency PTI, Mahesh Palawat, Vice President of Skymet Weather, said that northwesterly winds have been blowing toward Delhi from the Thar Desert in Rajasthan and parts of central Pakistan.

As the air passes through these arid regions, it becomes increasingly dry by the time it reaches the national capital. This phenomenon is keeping nighttime temperatures unusually high, as the ground lacks sufficient time to release its stored heat.

The weather office has warned that this situation is expected to persist for much of the coming week.

Mountains Reel Under Intense Heat

Along with the plains, mountainous regions are also reeling under intense heatwave conditions, with temperature irisng rapidly Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

- Kathua recorded a maximum temperature of 44.6 degrees Celsius, while Una in Himachal Pradesh reached 44 degrees Celsius.

- Shimla experienced its hottest day of the season, with the maximum temperature reaching 30.5 degrees Celsius.

- Intense heat has disrupted daily life in several parts of Uttarakhand, with temperatures exceeding the 40-degree Celsius mark in most areas, including Dehradun.
