India welcomed the New Year 2026 with much enthusiasm and grand celebrations across the country. From destination parties to house gatherings, Indians rang in the new year in their own unique ways. In Himachal, tourists witnessed snowfall on the very first day of the year in the hills of the famous tourist destination Manali, as well as across Rohtang, Shinkula, Baralacha, and the Atal Tunnel. Those who visited Koksar to witness the snow were greeted with snowflakes, and the celebrants enjoyed the snowfall in full spirit.

At Rohtang, Shinkula, Baralacha, and Kunzum passes, more than half a foot of snow was recorded. Zanskar-Samdo saw four inches, Koksar received three inches, and around two inches fell near the Atal Tunnel.

Road Access to Rohtang and Shinkula Restricted

On Wednesday, the eve of the New Year, snowfall occurred at Rohtang Pass, Shinkula, Koksar, Atal Tunnel, and all other high mountain peaks. Due to the heavy snow, access for vehicles to Rohtang and Shinkula passes has been restricted since Wednesday.

Tourists arriving at the Atal Tunnel and Koksar were welcomed with snowflakes. Four-wheel-drive vehicles managed to get past Koksar, while regular vehicles made it to Atal Tunnel and Sissu. Tourists revelled in the snow, taking photos and enjoying various snow activities.

Thousands of Tourists Set Up Camp Waiting for Snowfall

Thousands of tourists, hoping to witness the snow, have set up camp along Mall Road in Manali. While some tourists, after celebrating the New Year, have already returned home, many are still staying in Manali. The meteorological department has also forecast more snowfall. Although the snowflakes are currently confined to the mountains, there is hope that the snowfall will reach the valley by evening.

Rohtang Pass Closed Due to Snowfall

SDM Manali, Raman Kumar Sharma, stated that due to the snowfall, Rohtang Pass has been closed to tourists. He mentioned that the movement of vehicles through the pass will depend on weather conditions.
