"An under-construction seven-storey building collapsed in Anjaiah Nagar. So far, two people have lost their lives. Rescue teams have reached the spot, clearing of debris is underway, and the operation is in progress. We will provide more details later," a police official told news agency ANI.
Adjacent Structures Also Damaged
The collapse also damaged adjacent structures. "An unauthorised building—under the jurisdiction of the Madhapur Police Station—collapsed, and a portion of it fell onto the adjacent building. It was a seven-story structure; following the collapse, the topmost floor landed on the floor of the neighboring building. Essentially, the floors—from the first through the seventh—collapsed vertically," amodhar Singh, DY Commandant, NDRF 10 Battalion said.
MLA Alleges Illegal Construction
Following the incident, local Congress MLA Arekapudi Gandhi alleged that the building was unauthorised and had previously been halted by authorities.
"In Madhapur division, the illegal seven-storey under-construction building was stopped by officials for four months. They recently restarted the construction work illegally. The cellar work was being extended to the adjacent building connected to the seven-storey structure, which led to its sudden collapse," Gandhi told reporters.
He also raised broader concerns regarding unauthorised developments in the area. "People must understand the risks of illegal constructions. Some people are profiting through such illegal constructions. Many such illegal constructions are going on in Serilingampally. We are seizing buildings, but they are not following the norms. A similar incident had happened earlier, and now it has happened again," he added.
According to police officials, rescue operations are currently underway and further details are awaited.
Mohali Aerocity Building Collapse
In a separate incident on Thursday night, two people were killed after a section of an under-construction hospital building collapsed at Aerocity Mohali.
According to news agency IANS, heavy rainfall reportedly caused the ground on one side of the site to collapse, causing a portion of the structure to cave in.
