IIT Kanpur Suicide: In a heartbreaking incident, a 25-year-old PhD scholar allegedly died by suicide at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur campus by jumping from the sixth floor of a building.
The man has been identified as Ramswaroop Ishram. He was a research scholar in the Department of Earth Sciences. The incident which happened on Tuesday, is the second suicide case within three weeks. Ramswaroop was immediately taken to a private hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Ramswaroop Ishram Was Married, Had A Daughter
Ramswaroop hailed from Rajasthan’s Churu district and was married to Manju. They had a 3-year-old daughter and lived in the New SBRA residential block on IIT Kanpur campus.
Mental Health Issues Surface
"Preliminary investigation indicates that the student had been under mental stress for a long time. He had undergone counselling several times in the past," Deputy Commissioner of Police SM Qasim Abidi said, as quoted by an IndiaTV report.
The body has been sent for post-mortem. An investigation is underway in the matter.

Earlier on December 29, 2025, a 26-year-old final-year B Tech student of IIT Kanpur was found dead in his hostel room, police said.
A note with the words "Sorry Everyone" was recovered from the room, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kalyanpur) Ashutosh Kumar.
The student, Jai Singh Meena, a native of Ajmer in Rajasthan, was enrolled in the Biological Sciences and Bioengineering programme. He was staying in Room No 148 of E-Block at the campus hostel.
According to police, Meena was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a bedsheet. Preliminary examination suggests he may have cut his wrists before hanging himself.
The incident came to light after Meena failed to answer repeated phone calls from his family. Concerned relatives contacted one of his friends, who was away on vacation, and subsequently alerted other hostel residents. When knocks on the door went unanswered, students looked through a window and saw him hanging inside the room.
