India is set to begin 2026 with a significant move towards clean and sustainable transport as the country’s first hydrogen-powered train enters its final stages of preparation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the service later this month, with the inaugural trial run likely to take place on the 90-kilometre Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana from January 26, 2026.
In collaboration with the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and Spanish partner Green H, Indian Railways has finalised preparations for the train's maiden trial. Following the trial, a joint performance report will be submitted to the Centre, which will then decide the feasibility of wider rollout of hydrogen-powered rail services across the country.
India’s First Hydrogen Train: Check Key Features
Train Configuration: The hydrogen-powered train will operate with two driver power cars and eight passenger coaches, with a capacity for 2,500 passengers. It will be equipped with modern amenities such as fans, lights, automatic doors, digital passenger displays and air conditioning.
Train Schedule: The maiden trial run is likely to take place on January 26, 2026, on the 90-km Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana.
Speed: Built at a cost of Rs 89 crore, the hydrogen train is designed to run at speeds of up to 150 kmph and is powered through electrochemical technology that produces hydrogen from water. The system generates 900 grams of hydrogen from 9 kg of water, powering a train to run for one kilometre.
Storage: The system can store 3,000 kg of hydrogen and 7,680 kg of oxygen for long-distance travel, News18 reported.
Hydrogen Plant In Jind: India’s largest hydrogen plant has been established in Jind and is supported by a 1.5 megawatt power supply to ensure consistent fuel generation.
Onboard Technology: The hydrogen train features dual driver cars with 1,200-horsepower engines at both ends. Fuel cells are designed to generate 3,750-ampere DC current to power all onboard systems, including air-conditioning, lights, and fans.
Environmental Impact: As a zero-emission alternative to diesel, the train emits only vapour and heat.
India’s First Hydrogen Train To Hit Tracks Soon: Check Speed, Fares
Speaking to News18, an official said that the hydrogen-powered train is expected to operate at speeds between 110 and 140 kmph during its initial phase, completing the Jind-Sonipat journey in approximately 1 hour, compared to the 2 hours currently required by the diesel multiple unit operating on the route.
The hydrogen train will serve six stations along the route, with fares ranging between Rs 5 and Rs 25. The train has a capacity of about 2,500 passengers.
