India on Saturday successfully carried out a flight test of an advanced Agni missile equipped with a MIRV (Multiple Independently Targeted Re-entry Vehicle) system from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, located off the coast of Odisha. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) announced the successful flight test, marking a significant advancement in India’s strategic missile capabilities.
India Successfully Tests Advanced Agni Missile
In a post on X, DRDO stated that the missile was tested with multiple payloads designed to hit different targets simultaneously. This demonstrated its ability to engage several spatially separated targets across a wide area in the Indian Ocean Region. Telemetry and tracking operations were conducted by several ground-based and ship-based stations.
“Advanced Agni missile with MIRV (Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle) system was successfully tested from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha on 08th May 2026. The missile was flight tested with Multiple payloads, targeted to different targets spatially distributed over a large geographical area in Indian Ocean Region,” DRDO wrote.
What Is MIRV Technology?
MIRV is a missile technology where one ballistic missile carries multiple warheads, and each warhead can be guided to hit different targets independently after separating in space. This missile was developed by DRDO laboratories in collaboration with industries across the country. Flight data confirmed that all mission objectives were successfully met during the test. With this successful trial, India has once again demonstrated its capability to strike multiple strategic targets using a single missile system.
Rajnath Singh Lauds Achievement
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also lauded the successful flight test of the Agni missile. He stated that this achievement would provide unprecedented strength to the nation's defence preparedness.
A statement from Defence Minister’s office read: "Raksha Mantri Shri @rajnathsingh has complimented DRDO, Indian Army, and Industry on the successful flight test of Agni with MIRV Capability and stated that this would add an incredible capability to country’s defence preparedness against the growing threat perceptions."
