In recent weeks, there has been a surge in reports of dowry-related crimes. Amid this, another shocking incident has come to light in which a woman, who had entered into a love marriage against her family's wishes, was allegedly beaten to death by her husband over dowry demands.
The victim, identified as Bhumika, was a resident of Ramnagar, Uttarakhand. Four years ago, she married Deepak Kharkwal of Khumad, hoping to build a happy life with him. In 2022, the couple decided to spend their lives together despite opposition from their families and society. However, after marriage, instead of their bond growing stronger, tensions between them continued to escalate. According to reports, Deepak frequently assaulted Bhumika and allegedly subjected her to harassment over dowry demands.
The situation reached a tragic point on Thursday. In a fit of rage, Deepak allegedly attacked Bhumika repeatedly with a stick. She sustained multiple injuries, fell unconscious, and later succumbed to her wounds.
Estranged Parents Forced Out by Accused
Local residents revealed that Deepak's violent behaviour had also worsened within his own family. Unable to endure his alleged daily harassment, his parents reportedly left their home around 18 months ago. Since then, they had been living with different relatives, while his mother took up odd jobs to support the family. The elderly couple has been left devastated by their son's actions.

According to the Jagran correspondent, immediately after the alleged murder, Deepak called his mother and confessed to the crime before fleeing the scene. Villagers later informed the police about the incident. Upon reaching the spot, police took custody of the body and initiated further legal proceedings.
