Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Update: The much-awaited Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is nearing completion, with final finishing and safety testing process underway. The 63-kilometre, access-controlled highway is set to enhance connectivity in Uttar Pradesh by reducing distance between two major cities, Lucknow and Kanpur. The Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is being developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Once operational, the expressway will ease congestion on the existing National Highway (NH-27). It will reduce travel time from the current 3-4 hours to just 35-45 minutes, providing a faster, safer route for commuters and freight traffic. According to NHAI officials, the work on several sections of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is progressing rapidly, and the target is to complete it by March 20. With this, preparations are underway to open the expressway for public use from April 1, 2026. However, an official notification on this matter is awaited.
Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway to ease travel
Travelling from Lucknow to Kanpur will become much easier through this expressway. The maximum speed limit for vehicles on this expressway has been set at 120 kilometres per hour. The expressway will also be connected to the Lucknow-Agra Expressway, which will reduce the distance to Delhi. Built at a cost of over Rs 4,000 crore, the expressway has a total length of approximately 63 kilometers. Of this, approximately 45 kilometers fall in Kanpur and 17.8 kilometers in Lucknow, improving connectivity between the two cities.
The expressway starts at Shaheed Path in Lucknow, passes through Bani, Kantha and Amarsas, ending near Kanpur's Ganga Bridge. The stretch features six flyovers, 38 underpasses, 28 minor bridges, and three large bridges to make travel faster. More than 80 CCTV cameras have been installed along the expressway for security purposes. These cameras will monitor every movement of vehicles. If a vehicle remains stationary for more than two minutes, information will be immediately sent to the control room.
