Skywatchers across America will miss this year's total lunar eclipse as the event coincides with daylight hours, with the Moon setting below the horizon before the eclipse begins.

Delhi residents were treated to a spectacular celestial phenomenon as the lunar eclipse entered its full phase, turning the moon red also known as 'Blood Moon.'

The blood moon is seen in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, as the total lunar eclipse commences.

During the lunar eclipse, sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere will scatter shorter wavelengths while allowing longer red and orange wavelengths to reach the Moon's surface, giving it a red-orange hue. This phenomenon is known as the 'Blood Moon'.

Surur Fatima, an official from Jawahar Planetarium, says the eclipse is entirely safe to observe and has no harmful effects. "People should definitely experience this rare celestial event. It is very significant for science students, and everyone should watch it. Many new discoveries in our country have been made during eclipses," she says.

The total lunar eclipse is set to commence soon as the moon is set to be entirely covered in the umbral shadow of the Earth.

The partial lunar eclipse begins as the Moon enters the umbral shadow of the Earth.

"India is going to witness a total lunar eclipse. This eclipse will start at 8:58 pm. Its colour will become red at around 11. So this eclipse is also known as the Red Blood Moon. This is going to be the last lunar eclipse of this year," says Prerna Chandra, Programming Manager of Nehru Planetarium.

The partial lunar eclipse will begin at 9.57 PM today and will end at 1.26 AM on September 8. The partial eclipse will commence shortly as the moon moves closer to the umbral shadow of the Earth.  

The temples of Badrinath and Kedarnath, along with all subordinate shrines under the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), remain closed as the lunar eclipse or the Chandra Grahan is underway. The temples were shut at 12:58 pm when the 'Sutak' period began. They shrines will reopen for devotees on the morning of September 8, following the purification rituals.

Astrologer Pandit Purushottam Gaud says the lunar eclipse will mark the beginning of the 'Shraddha Paksha', a ritual performed to honour the deceased souls of ancestors. He states that it is a good time for charity.

The doors of Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple atop Tirumala near Tirupati and all major temples in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were closed on Sunday due to lunar eclipse. The priests closed the doors of the temples after performing rituals. They will be re-opened early Monday after purification rituals. 

The Moon has entered the penumbral shadow of the Earth, marking the beginning of the 82-minute long lunar eclipse. 

The penumbral lunar eclipse will begin shortly, at 8:58 PM today. The partial eclipse will begin almost an hour later around 9:57 PM.

The total lunar eclipse will peak at 11.48 PM today, September 7, and will go on for the next 48 minutes.  

The Lunar Eclipse or the Chandra Grahan is associated with astrological and mythological beliefs in India.

- Many ancient cultures saw lunar eclipses as omens of change or warnings from the gods.
- In Hindu mythology, it is believed that the demon Rahu swallows the Moon during Chandra Grahan.
- Many people fast or avoid eating during an eclipse.

The world will witness a rare celestial spectacle today as the sky turns red at night. The blood moon will be visible to the naked eye as the total lunar eclipse occurs today. A total lunar eclipse takes place when the Earth comes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow across the lunar surface. A reddish hue is cast at the moon during this period. 

All temples in the Uttarakhand, including those of the Char Dham, will remain closed on Sunday during the Sutak Kaal, an inauspicious period. The Sutak Kaal began at 12:57 PM, nine hours before the eclipse.

The Blood moon will be visible after the lunar eclipse begins around 8:58 PM today, September 7, 2025. It will be visible from the penumbral phase till 2.25 AM on September 8, when the eclipse ends.

According to space scientist Dr Suvendu Patnaik, the next total lunar eclipse will occur next year, on March 3, 2026.

Senior Planetarium Engineer at Nehru Planetarium, OP Gupta, clears the misconception around watching a lunar eclipse: "People can watch it easily. There will be no harm to the eyes. There is nothing to fear. There is no need to take precautions. You can even eat and drink during it. There has been a misconception for many years that food spoils during an eclipse. Nothing of the sort happens."

Space Scientist Dr Suvendu Patnaik says the lunar eclipse will be visible to the naked eye across India if the skies are clear. Clouds may hamper visibility in certain parts of the country. "The current eclipse is a long duration eclipse which can be seen through naked eye throughout India if there is a cloudless sky," he says.

Delhiites will get to witness a total lunar eclipse tonight. In Delhi, the penumbral lunar eclipse will begin at 8.58 pm. The partial eclipse will begin at around 9.57 pm. The eclipse will peak at 11.48 pm and last for 48 minutes. Former Director of MP Birla Planetarium, Dr Devi Prasad Duari said, "Everyone should see this lunar eclipse because the scene of this great global event is mesmerising. No one should have any fear that something can go wrong during the lunar eclipse. Everyone should see this event because it reminds us of the Sun, Moon and Earth, which we do not think about every day."
