Mumbai is staring at major disruptions after employees of BEST, the city's key public transport and electricity provider, launched an indefinite strike on Friday. The Joint Action Committee of BEST workers has accused the administration of ignoring their long-pending demands, forcing them to take the protest route.
The strike is expected to affect lakhs of daily commuters who rely on BEST buses for travel across Mumbai. If services remain suspended, office-goers and students may face significant difficulties, with added pressure on alternative modes of transport.

Power Supply Concerns In South Mumbai
The agitation is not limited to the transport wing. Employees from the BEST electricity department have also joined the strike, raising concerns about possible disruptions to the power supply in several parts of South Mumbai.
What Are The Employees Demanding?
The BEST Joint Workers Action Committee has put forward several key demands:
- Inclusion of the BEST budget in the main budget of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
- Immediate implementation of the 2016-2026 wage settlement and payment of pending dues.
- Release of outstanding benefits owed to retired employees.
- Permanent employment for contract workers.
- Procurement of 5,000 new BEST-owned buses.
- Recruitment for vacant posts and resumption of stalled promotions.
BEST authorities maintain that bus transport and electricity supply are essential services and have assured efforts to minimise inconvenience to the public. Reports have emerged indicating that the government might invoke the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act (MESMA) to enforce no disruption in the services.
Major Challenge For Mumbaikars
The strike also comes in the wake of the city reeling under monsoon-related traffic bottlenecks and packed local trains. If the BEST bus service remains unavailable for a longer duration, it would mean an increase in crowding in local trains, metros, taxis, and auto-rickshaws.
Additionally, any power disruption could spell trouble for residents, business and commercial outlets across parts of the city.
It remains to be seen if the negotiations between the state government, BEST administration and employee unions will end the impasse.
