Chennai Metro Update: In a major update for the commuters, the first stretch of Chennai Metro's Phase-2 network will be inaugurated on October 11, the officials informed. However, they clarified that the trains will not operate in driverless mode until mid-2027. The trains will operate between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani, providing major relief to the passengers by cutting the travel time and reducing traffic congestion.
PM Modi Likely To Inaugurate
As per the CMRL officials, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the stretch and is also expected to take a ride on one of the trains, reported Times of India. While the corridor has a total of 17 stations, only 11 will be open for the commuters in the initial phase, the officials added. The trains will bypass six stations, including Alapakkam, Karambakkam, Valasaravakkam, and Avichi School.
While providing details, the officials stated that two operators will remain present in the train, adding that the brakes will be applied manually. However, they clarified that the driverless trains will begin operation by the mid-2027. The brakes will be applied manually temporarily as the signaling system has not be synced with the trains yet.
"We will have two operators onboard all the trains and operate them in degraded mode. It means the operator will have to apply brakes manually as the signalling system and trains are not synced. We will go driverless by mid-2027," an official was quoted as saying by TOI.
Fifteen Trains To Operate
As per the reports, fifteen trains will operate on the corridor initially at 10-minute intervals. While the fare between Vadapalani and Poonamallee Bypass will be Rs 40, the commuters will have to pay Rs 50 if they travel from Poonamallee Bypass to Airport.
The officials stated that the metro service on this route will also benefit the IT commuters, adding that it will improve the travel experience for the flight passengers.
