Chaos erupted on campus today as Left youth activists and Youth Congress workers clashed fiercely outside a Thiruvananthapuram university. The violent standoff unfolded amidst heated demonstrations targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar,…
Youth Congress workers alleged that stones were thrown at the march from inside the hostel, while SFI/DYFI activists accused the protesters of throwing burning torches towards hostel inmates. The confrontation escalated into stone-pelting before police intervened and carried out a lathi charge inside and outside the hostel.
The SFI alleged that students were assaulted without provocation and announced a statewide protest at educational institutions.
160 Activists Booked
The Museum police booked 80 KSU/Youth Congress activists, including Nemom Shajeer, Gopy Nayyar, Sayedali Kaippadi, Syamlal and Abhijith. Another 80 SFI/DYFI activists, including Venu, Sreekumar, Denny, Aswin and Adithyan, were also booked.
Police said the cases were registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Kerala Police Act, Kerala Public Way Restriction of Assemblies and Procession Act and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. The accused will be summoned and arrested as the offences are non-bailable, police said.
BJP, Congress Trade Fresh Allegations
The violence also triggered a wider political confrontation in the state capital. CPI(M) leaders V Sivankutty, P K Sreemathi and V Joy staged a sit-in outside the hostel, while senior party leader K K Shailaja alleged that the police action had been carried out on specific instructions.
BJP national executive committee member PK Krishnadas separately alleged that Congress and Youth Congress workers attacked his vehicle while he was travelling to Neyyattinkara for a BJP protest march and public meeting.
“Yesterday, Congress activists stopped and brutally attacked the BJP district president. BJP had organised a protest march and public meeting in Neyyattinkara against the incident. While I was on my way to attend it, Youth Congress and Congress leaders attacked my vehicle in the presence of the police. They broke the car window,” Krishnadas told ANI.
Krishnadas also alleged that liquor bottles were later thrown at the BJP state office, Mararji Bhavan, in Thiruvananthapuram.
Meanwhile, Congress leader V D Satheesan condemned attacks on party offices. The Thiruvananthapuram DCC office was allegedly pelted with stones by unidentified miscreants, while a fire was reported at the Neyyattinkara Anavoor Mandalam Committee office.
In a post on X, Satheesan said, “The act of criminals who pelted stones at the District Congress Committee office in Thiruvananthapuram and set fire to the Neyyattinkara Anavoor Mandal Committee office is utterly condemnable. Strict legal action will be taken against those who carried out the violence.”
