The English dictionary has again expanded with the inclusion of internet vocabulary, as Merriam-Webster has added 1,400 new words. The latest addition includes words related to Artificial Intelligence, food, culture, dating, Gen Z vocabulary and much more. Some of the words are vibe coding, meme coin, looksmaxxing, parasocial, copium, crashout, cuffing season, Sunday scaries and Rickroll.

Detailing the basis for additions, Merriam-Webster stated that new entries were selected for frequency, widespread and meaningful usage. This means these 1,400 words managed to be in common parlance for a significant time.

Some words and their meaning

Vibe Coding: In the age of AI, computer code is not only manually written and hence vibe coding. It refers to using AI to create computer code.

Compute: The word has got a new noun definition referring to the computational resources like memory and processing power required for a computer to function.

Copium: An internet-born word, imagined as a narcotic, Copium is defined as avoidance, denial or minimisation of a bad situation, problem or outcome. The word is a blend of 'cope' and 'opium'.

Cuffing Season: The word refers to the time of year when single people start looking for a short-term romantic interest to spend the colder months with.

Rickroll: An internet prank and meme where a user is tricked into listening to Rick Astley's 1987 hit 'Never Gonna Give You Up' through a disguised link.

Parasocial: A hypothetical relationship with a celebrity based on a feeling of being invested in them without ever meeting them in person. Parasocial refers to something relating to a one-sided emotional connection with someone, especially a celebrity or fictional character.

Sunday Scaries: Now that's something most people will relate to. The word is defined as feelings of anxiety or sadness arising on Sunday from knowing that the weekend is almost over.

Looksmaxxing: The dictionary defines it as the practice of taking measures, sometimes extreme or dangerous ones, to increase one’s physical attractiveness.
