Gurugram's Sohna Road witnessed a 3-km-long traffic jam on Monday afternoon due to an unannounced protest by students, leaving an ambulance and other vehicles stuck for hours.

The unexpected jam choked key arterial roads from the busy Rajiv Chowk underpass to the District and Sessions Court.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the road was jammed for two to three hours. The report quoted a commuter heading towards Old Gurugram saying, "We had not moved an inch in nearly 40 minutes."

Some students reportedly staged a sit-in protest outside the State Council of Educational Research and Training office on Monday over some admission issues.

Some of the commuters said that the exhaust fumes from the vehicles were trapped inside the underpass, which caused suffocation. The persistent honking further added to the ordeal. "The worst part was seeing an ambulance siren wailing right behind us with nowhere to go," a commuter said.

This led to a massive traffic jam on the key stretch. As vehicles started to pile up on the road, the Gurugram traffic police responded promptly and started diverting vehicles to ease congestion.

"The traffic police were prompt in diverting traffic to ease the congestion. Our teams were deployed on the ground continuously to monitor the situation," Gurugram traffic police spokesperson Vikas Verma was quoted as saying.

After nearly three hours of efforts, the traffic police personnel managed to regulate the traffic and implement diversions. The bottlenecks were eased gradually by the traffic cops to restore normal traffic movement.
