Delhi: The long-awaited Barapullah Phase 3 elevated corridor is set for inauguration on September 29, Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh announced on Saturday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will attend the inauguration, according to a report by news agency PTI.
Signal-Free Connectivity Between Mayur Vihar And AIIMS
The project aims to provide seamless connectivity between East and South Delhi, directly linking Mayur Vihar Phase 1 and AIIMS via signal-free carriageways. The newly constructed flyover will merge with the existing Barapullah flyover near Sarai Kale Khan, completing a stretch of approximately nine kilometres.
According to officials, both key ramps are fully built, one extending from the Mayur Vihar side and the other connecting from the existing corridor near Sarai Kale Khan. Additionally, the PWD has finalised structural work on the extra-dosed bridge over the Yamuna River, which will hold the entire corridor together.
India's First Flyover Corridor With Dedicated Cycle Track
Speaking to PTI, Singh called the project a landmark in urban infrastructure.
"The project is also set to become a landmark in urban infrastructure development. For the first time in India, a flyover corridor has been designed with a dedicated cycle track, promoting greener and more sustainable mobility for Delhiites. Alongside faster vehicular movement, the project also includes pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and modern urban design elements," the minister said.
Project Timelines, Delays, And Revised Budget
Originally approved in 2014, construction on the stretch was initiated in 2015, with an initial completion deadline set for 2017. However, the project faced multiple delays and significant cost overruns over the years. With these adjustments, the revised project cost now stands at approximately Rs 1,635 crore.
