Delhi: Modi Mill Flyover Extension To Directly Connect With Kalkaji, Nehru Place And Savitri Cinema Roads To Ease Traffic

The Delhi government is extending the Modi Mill Flyover in South Delhi by connecting it with the Kalkaji Flyover and further extending the corridor to the Nehru Place and Savitri Cinema flyovers.

The proposal has been put forward by the Traffic Department in view of frequent traffic congestion on the Outer Ring Road, particularly around Bhairav Mandir, the CNG station and the stretch beyond the Nehru Place Flyover. The department has suggested the plan to the Public Works Department (PWD) as a long-term measure to ease congestion in the area.

Plan to Ease Traffic Congestion

According to a report by Jagran.com, local MLA and Chairperson of the District Development Committee Shikha Rai said the proposal would be presented to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. A comprehensive plan to address the persistent traffic congestion in the area is expected to be discussed.

Following the PWD team's assessment, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and PWD Minister Parvesh Verma may conduct a site inspection before taking a final decision on the feasibility of the proposed extension.

Kalkaji Flyover Extension Underway

Meanwhile, work on the second lane of the single-lane Kalkaji Flyover, along with its extension towards Modi Mill, began about a month ago. The project has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 312.94 crore.

Work on the second lane of the 435-metre-long Savitri Cinema Flyover is also expected to begin soon. The project is estimated to cost Rs 58.81 crore.

However, the Traffic Department has cautioned that connecting the Kalkaji Flyover to Modi Mill alone may not provide substantial relief from traffic congestion in this part of South Delhi.

A major bottleneck exists near Bhairav Mandir, beyond the Kalkaji Flyover. Traffic from Maa Anandmayi Marg, Modi Mill and Nehru Place converges at the same point after taking U-turns. As a result, even after the Kalkaji and Modi Mill flyovers are connected, congestion could continue at this location.

The situation is further aggravated by vehicles parked along the road near Bhairav Mandir, particularly those belonging to visitors. This reduces the four-lane carriageway to just one to one-and-a-half lanes.

Further ahead, three petrol pumps and long queues of vehicles waiting for CNG create another bottleneck extending for nearly 300 metres, adding to traffic delays.

Demand to Connect Nehru Place and Savitri Cinema Flyovers

The distance between Modi Mill and Chirag Delhi is approximately four kilometres. While the Modi Mill Flyover is being extended to the Kalkaji Flyover, work on the second lane of the Savitri Cinema Flyover is also expected to commence shortly.

Only about two kilometres of road remain between these stretches, with around 500 metres covered by the elevated Nehru Place Flyover.

The Traffic Department has therefore proposed connecting the Kalkaji Flyover with the Nehru Place Flyover and subsequently extending the Nehru Place Flyover up to the Savitri Cinema Flyover.

If implemented, the proposal could create a longer, more continuous elevated corridor between Modi Mill and the Savitri Cinema area, potentially easing traffic movement and reducing bottlenecks along this busy stretch of South Delhi.
