Punjab Assembly Election: With just a few months remaining in the Punjab assembly election, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) confirmed that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will again contest from Dhuri constituency. The Sangrur district is likely to emerge as the centre of Punjab politics with reports suggesting both Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Congress considering to field high-profile leaders against Mann. The opposition parties are likely to announce their candidates in the coming weeks.
Will SAD Field Bikram Majithia?
As per the reports, the SAD could consider to field senior leader Bikram Singh Majithia against the chief minister. While Ranjit Singh Randhawa has been made the regional party in-charge by SAD, the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led party is considering to field its prominent leader to counter the narratives of AAP. While AAP blamed Shromani and Majithia for the drug issue in Punjab, the senior leader has been the vocal critic of the Bhagwant Mann government.
Who Will Contest On Congress Ticket?
Earlier, former Congress MLA Dalveer Singh Goldy declared that he will contest against Bhagwant Mann. However, soon after AAP released its first ticket, the party is reportedly considering to filed Sukhpal Singh Khaira, a fierce critic of Mann. The party leadership is likely to meet the regional heavyweights in the coming days to seek their feedback before making any final announcement.
Campaign Against Bhagwant Mann
In a public rally, SAD chief Sukhbir Badal recently urged the voters of Sangrur to not repeat the mistake of 2022 polls, when AAP registered a landslide victory. Apart from this, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is also likely to visit the region on November 4. The Congress leadership has strongly criticized Bhagwant Mann for his alleged failure to maintain the law and order. The assembly election in Punjab is scheduled to be conducted in the early months of 2027.
