Communal tensions escalated in Chomu town of Rajasthan's Jaipur after a dispute over the removal of stones from a religious site triggered violence between two communities. The stones were pelted at the police which led to injuries to several personnel. The police have detained several individuals from the site
Police arrived at the scene soon after getting the information and tried to calm the situation, but the dispute escalated to the extent that the crowd began pelting stones at the police. Several police officers were injured in the incident.
DCP Jaipur West, Hanuman Prasad Meena said, "There is a Kalandari Mosque here where a dispute over encroachment had been ongoing for quite some time. One party voluntarily removed the encroachment, but some people tried to re-establish it permanently by installing iron angles. We were removing these structures when some people pelted stones at the police. We will take strict action against all those involved. Currently, there is peace in the area..."
How did violence start?
A dispute broke out over the removal of stones lying outside a mosque near the bus stand in Chomu, Jaipur, leading to communal tension around midnight.
According to reports, the stones had been lying on the roadside near the religious site for about 45 years. Work is underway to remove these stones to improve traffic flow in Chomu, which has led to tension in the area.
The administration also spoke with representatives of the community involved in the incident. Only after mutual agreement was reached did the administration begin removing the stones from the area.
The stone removal work in this area of Chomu had been completed. However, as soon as the railing installation began, some people objected and started protesting. This protest escalated into violence.
Internet service shut down
Jaipur police, including senior police officials, arrived at the scene to contain the situation. Seeing the situation escalating, the police resorted to tear gas shelling to bring the situation under control.

As part of preventive measures, the police suspended the internet services in Chomu from 7:00 AM on December 26 to 7:00 AM on December 27.
