Businessman Sunjay Kapur, who died last month during a polo match in London, passed away from “natural causes,” according to British medical authorities. A formal letter confirming the cause of death was sent to his wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, on Sunday.
As per a report by NDTV citing the Surrey Coroner's Office, the investigation determined that Kapur died due to natural causes, specifically identifying left ventricular hypertrophy and ischaemic heart disease.
Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) occurs when the heart's left ventricle becomes abnormally thick, impairing its ability to pump blood effectively. This condition is often linked to high blood pressure, which forces the heart to work harder over time.
Ischaemic heart disease, also known as coronary artery disease, results from reduced blood flow and oxygen to the heart muscle, usually caused by the narrowing of arteries. This narrowing is most often the result of atherosclerosis, the accumulation of fatty deposits and other substances on the arterial walls.
Despite the official medical findings, Sunjay Kapur’s death has sparked a sharp family dispute and drawn international attention. His mother, Rani Kapur, former chairperson of Sona Comstar, has approached UK authorities, demanding a full investigation into what she calls the “mysterious circumstances” of her son’s sudden demise.
Sources cited by ANI confirmed that a criminal complaint has been filed in the UK, challenging the reported circumstances of his death. The complaint, lodged by Rani Kapur, calls for immediate intervention by British law enforcement.
In an emotional video interview with ANI, her first public statement since her son’s death, Rani Kapur voiced her pain and ongoing suspicions. “I still don't know what happened to my son,” she said, visibly distressed. “I'm old now. I need closure before I go.”
Reflecting on the early days of Sona, the company she co-founded with her late husband, she recalled the sacrifices made to build the business. Her comments appeared to challenge the company’s position that she has had no involvement in its operations since 2019.
As the succession battle intensifies, the company recently named Sunjay’s wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, as a non-executive director, effective July 23, 2025. The next day, Rani Kapur sent a letter to the firm alleging that certain individuals had used the period of mourning to “wrest control and usurp the family legacy.”
She also claimed she was pressured into signing documents shortly after her son’s death and called on the board to cancel the upcoming annual general meeting, urging against any new appointments.
At the time of his death, Sunjay Kapur’s net worth was estimated at Dollar 1.2 billion (Rs 10,300 crore), according to Forbes.
