Tamil Nadu Weather: The Chennai Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy rainfall in several parts of Tamil Nadu on January 9 and 10, advising residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert. Weather officials said changing atmospheric conditions over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are expected to bring rain to coastal and delta districts.

Tamil Nadu Districts Likely To Receive Heavy Showers

According to the bulletin issued by the Chennai Meteorological Centre, heavy rainfall is likely in parts of the state on Thursday, January 9. Districts that may be affected include Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram and Karaikal. On Friday, January 10, heavy showers are expected in Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Thanjavur.

Chennai Weather

Meanwhile, Chennai and its neighbouring suburban areas are likely to experience partly cloudy skies with light mist during early morning hours. Other regions of the state may see dry weather conditions. Officials have advised people living in low-lying and rain-prone areas to take precautions.

Meteorologists explained that a lower-level circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea near the Kerala coast, along with an upper-level circulation over the Bay of Bengal, is creating favourable conditions for rainfall. Due to these systems, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are expected to receive scattered rain over the next six days.

Western Ghats Receive Rain, Temperatures May Drop

Weather officials said coastal districts, including Puducherry and Karaikal, are more likely to receive light to moderate rainfall over the next two days. Interior parts of the state may largely remain dry. Morning fog is also expected in some areas and temperatures could fall by two to three degrees Celsius in certain regions.

Districts along the Western Ghats, such as the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Theni and Tirunelveli, have already received rainfall, which has eased the recent cold conditions. The weather department has also warned fishermen of strong winds over parts of the Bay of Bengal and advised them not to venture into the sea during this period.
