Umar Khalid Bail: The Delhi High Court on Friday granted three days interim bail to Umar Khalid ahead of his mother's surgery in the UAPA case alleging larger conspiracy in the 2020 Delhi Riots. The high court granted him bail between June 1 and 3 under strict conditions. The former JNU student had sought 15 days of bail to attend the ritual after death of his uncle and his mother's surgery, scheduled on June 2.
While appearing for Khalid, Senior Adocate Trideep Pais stated that Khalid was granted interim bail for his sister's wedding. The senior advocate further argued that Khalid should get relief as he was given interim bail twice on similar grounds. However, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the Delhi Police objected to the bail.

The additional solicitor general argued that Khalid's mother has to undergo a minor surgery, adding that the other family members, including his sister, can take care of her. ASG Raju further stated that he could visit his mother and come back in a single day under the supervision of police.
Upon listening to the argument from both the sides, the court highlighted that the bail could be provided; however, it pointed out that Khalid will have only mobile and will be in touch with the investigative officer. "Interim bail is granted for 3 days from 1-3 June, in order to enable the appellant to spend time with his mother," the court stated.
Khalid, along with several others, has been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly being among the “masterminds” behind the 2020 northeast Delhi riots, which claimed 53 lives and left over 700 people injured.
The violence had erupted during widespread protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
