Uttarakhand Government is set to bring 'Uttarakhand Public and Private Property Damage Recovery Bill' to penalise the miscreants involved in causing damage to public and private property during protests, news agency ANI reported. The provision will be introduced in the budget session, which will commence on February 26.
Under the bill, the damage caused to private or public property, during rampage, will be recovered from the accused. To push this through, a tribunal will be constructed under the supervision of a retired district judge.
Dhami-led Uttarakhand government is on a spree of introducing new provisions in the state. Days back, Uttarakhand became the only state to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The draft proposes uniform civil laws for all communities in the state.
Terming it a “historic moment”, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the Assembly had become the first legislature in independent India to pass a Bill that imposes common rules for all communities — except Scheduled Tribes — on marriage, divorce, inheritances, and live-in relationships.
The Opposition, however, sought time to read the provisions of the bill before passing it. They said it should have been handed over to to the House’s select committee first.
The draft report on UCC was approved by the cabinet before its introduction in the house. The UCC drafting committee, led by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, submitted the draft to Chief Minister Dhami.

The UCC will provide a legal framework for uniform marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance laws for all citizens, irrespective of their religion. The passage of the UCC Bill marked the fulfilment of a major promise made by the BJP to the people of the state in the run-up to the 2022 Assembly polls.
