Monsoon Update: The southwest monsoon is advancing rapidly across India, bringing a mix of relief and disruption as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). While several regions are set to cool down with widespread rain, other parts of the country continue to face intense heatwave conditions.
According to IMD forecasts, the monsoon is expected to cover Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra within the next 48 hours. This is likely to bring significant relief from high humidity and rising temperatures across the region.
So far, the monsoon has already progressed into parts of Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar, where rainfall activity has begun increasing.
Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall alert in Northeast
At the same time, the northeastern states are bracing for intense rainfall. IMD has issued warnings for heavy to extremely heavy showers (exceeding 20 cm) until June 28 in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.
Authorities have also warned of possible flood-like conditions in Meghalaya, which could severely impact normal life and infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
Weather conditions across the country remain sharply divided. While Goa, the Konkan region of Maharashtra, and Bihar are expected to receive heavy rainfall, several parts of Vidarbha, eastern Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh continue to remain under severe heatwave conditions.
The IMD has also indicated that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist for the next four to five days in these regions, keeping temperatures dangerously high.

Heavy rain alerts for Maharashtra and West Bengal
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), citing IMD forecasts, has issued an orange alert for Mumbai. The warning includes thunderstorms, lightning, moderate to intense rainfall spells, and gusty winds.
Meanwhile, very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected to continue over Northeast India until June 25 and over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim until June 22.
Monsoon delay expected in Delhi
Weather experts have indicated that the southwest monsoon may arrive late in the National Capital Territory of Delhi this year. Its onset could be delayed until early July, instead of the usual June 27.
They also clarified that the recent thunderstorms and rainfall in Delhi are not linked to the monsoon system but are part of pre-monsoon weather activity. The delay is attributed to the slower-than-usual northward progress of the monsoon, which has yet to fully cover parts of western India, including areas where it typically arrives much earlier.
