Weather Update: The IMD has issued a red alert for portions of central Maharashtra until July 24 due to the severe waterlogging and persistent rains that Mumbai is experiencing. With a high tide alert in effect for the afternoon, the city, its suburbs, and nearby districts—Thane, Palghar, and Raigad—are preparing for further intense downpours.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and Thane on Tuesday and an orange alert for Wednesday due to heavy rain. Given the severity of the situation, Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, and West Madhya Pradesh have been issued red alert.
Heavy rain that has been pouring nonstop since Saturday night has created severe flooding and traffic jams. Fortunately, there were no injuries when a mobile tower in Bhandup fell, destroying many homes. Pictures of submerged police stations on social media abound, illustrating the full depth of the deluge's effects.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been dispatched throughout Maharashtra in response to the warning of severe rains. NDRF teams have been stationed in Vasai (Palghar), Thane, Ghatkopar, Powai (Kurla), Mahad (Raigad), Khed and Chiplun (Ratnagiri), Kudal (Sindhudurg), Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara, in addition to their usual locations in Mumbai and Nagpur.
