Maharashtra News: The Maharashtra government has announced a local holiday on December 6 to honour Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his Mahaparinirvana Diwas. This day marks the anniversary of Ambedkar's death in 1956 and it serves as an opportunity to remember his contributions to Indian society.
An official notification confirmed that the local holiday will apply to state and semi-government offices in Mumbai and its suburban areas. The order references Government Decision No. P and S. Number P-13/II/B, dated November 5, 1958, which outlines such provisions for local holidays.
This declaration follows the earlier announcements of local holidays for Dahi Handi and Ganesh Visarjan.
Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, widely known as Babasaheb Ambedkar, was a prominent social reformer and the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. He played a crucial role in the Constituent Assembly, helping to create India’s longest-written constitution.
Additionally, On December 6, a large gathering is expected at Chaityabhoomi in Shivaji Park, less than 2 kilometres from Dadar station, as people pay homage to Dr BR Ambedkar on his 68th death anniversary. Chaityabhoomi is the site of Ambedkar’s cremation and a revered memorial.
Mumbai Special Trains
To accommodate the influx, Central Railway has arranged special trains, help desks and security measures. On December 5 and 6, 12 additional suburban trains six each on the main and harbour lines will operate at night. A holding area between the Central and Western Railway lines has been set up to manage 7,000–8,000 people, with designated entry and exit points at Dadar ensuring smooth crowd movement.
Information about special trains, including their timings and numbers, has been displayed at Mumbai CSMT, Dadar, Thane and Kalyan stations. Frequent announcements are being made through public address systems, confirmed Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila.
Special ticket-checking squads, along with RPF and GRP personnel, have been stationed at originating points to ensure only valid passengers board reserved coaches. Platform tickets are restricted to senior citizens and divyangs until December 9 at key stations like CSMT, Dadar, Thane and Kalyan. These measures aim to ensure a seamless experience for visitors.
