Mumbai News: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that the second arm of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project’s bow-string bridge will be opened to traffic on January 26. This new section will provide a direct connection between the coastal road and the Bandra Worli Sea Link.

BMC officials confirmed that the installation of girders is now complete. Final works, including waterproofing, asphalting and the installation of electric poles, are currently underway. “We are on track to open the bridge for southbound traffic by January 26,” an official stated.

On November 27, the BMC completed the last phase of girder installation for the bow-string bridge. Once the new arm is opened, the entire structure will be fully operational. Currently, the bridge is partially open, facilitating northbound traffic on the southbound carriageway. This section, inaugurated in September, allows vehicles from South Mumbai’s Nariman Point to access the Bandra Worli Sea Link directly via the coastal road, as per the Indian Express report.

According to BMC officials, this bow-string arch bridge is the longest of its kind in India to span an open sea.

The completion of this bridge will be a crucial milestone in the first phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project, which was partially inaugurated on March 11. The BMC had previously opened the southern arm from Worli to Marine Drive on that date. The northern section, linking Marine Drive to Haji Ali, was opened on June 11, and the final 3.5 km stretch between Haji Ali and Worli became operational on July 11.

In a recent development, the BMC also opened the sixth arm of the coastal road’s Haji Ali interchange towards Worli for traffic. Senior officials mentioned that two more interchanges are expected to be operational by May 2025. The first phase of the coastal road includes a total of eight interchanges.

“Of the eight interchanges, the sixth and seventh are pending. The sixth connects Haji Ali to Marine Drive, while the seventh will link Worli to Lotus Jetty Junction,” an official added.

In addition, the second phase of the coastal project, which will stretch from Versova in the western suburbs to Dahisar, has received approval from the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change. This phase is estimated to cost Rs 16,621 crore and will include various bridges, flyovers, and underground tunnels.
