A man was booked in Maharashtra's Thane for allegedly giving triple talaq to his 25-year-old wife, police said on Friday. The accused reportedly took this action after learning she went for a walk alone. According to the complaint, the accused, a resident of Mumbra, called his wife’s father on Tuesday, declaring he was annulling the marriage through triple talaq, which is an instant divorce banned in 2019.
Based on the wife's complaint, police filed an FIR on Wednesday under Section 351(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal intimidation and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act. An investigation is ongoing, authorities said.
In a separate incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad, a woman accused her husband of verbally giving her triple talaq last week. She claimed the act followed her praise of the police’s efforts in controlling violence in Sambhal district, which erupted after a court-ordered survey of a local mosque. The violence led to four deaths and injuries to several people.

What is Triple Talaq?
Triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat is a practice in which a Muslim man instantly divorces his wife by saying "talaq" three times. Previously allowed under the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act of 1937, the practice granted husbands unilateral power to dissolve marriages.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, criminalised triple talaq. Passed on July 30, 2019, it declares such divorces void and illegal. The law prescribes up to three years of imprisonment and a fine for offenders. According to Clause 3 of the law, pronouncing triple talaq through any medium, including verbal written, or electronic forms, is a punishable offence.
