Jagannath Rath Yatra is one of the most sacred festivals celebrated by Hindus, especially in the state of Odisha. The Rath Yatra takes place every year on the second day (Dwitiya Tithi) of the bright fortnight in the Hindu month of Ashadha. This year, it starts on 16th July 2026. During this Rath Yatra, devotees from around the world visit the holy city of Puri and witness the sacred sight of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra riding on the grand chariots.
However, many devotees are unable to visit Puri due to various reasons, but that doesn't mean they cannot celebrate and show their devotion to the 'Lord Of The Universe'. One of the most beautiful aspects of this festival is that the Lord Jagannath tradition doesn't emphasise grand rituals. A sincere puja performed with love and devotion at home will also be as meaningful as attending the Rath Yatra.
How To Perform Rath Yatra Puja At Home?
To perform the Rath Yatra Puja at home correctly, you need to keep a few things in mind.
1. Choose The Right Space And Direction
You don't need a large setup for a mandir. A small, clean space is enough to show your love and devotion towards lord Jagannath. Simply place a saffron or yellow cloth on a clean shelf or wooden chowki and place the idols on it.
The idol should be placed in this manner:
- The Jagannath idol should be placed on the right side.
- His brother Balabhadra on the left.
- Goddess Subhadra in the centre.
According to Vastu, the best direction to place the idol is the northeast (ishaan) of the house; otherwise, you could even place it east or north-facing. Avoid the south-facing placement.
