Apple Intelligence features: Apple’s collaboration with Google has roused many questions, particularly about one: who actually controls Siri when Gemini is in the picture? Now a new report claims to have the answer — Apple.
Apple isn’t going to handle Gemini the way it does ChatGPT
In contrast, The Information (via 9to5Mac) reports that Apple will wield significantly more control over Gemini than it did with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Apple will have the ability to do more than just pass through requests. It can:
- Fine-tune Gemini’s reply so that it reflects Apple’s preferred tone and approach
- Request Google to change the model behaviour at a lower level
- Add Gemini in a white-label or no-branding manner without notifying your users
- Basically, users won’t see “Powered by Gemini” labels. Siri replies will be native, not subcontracted out.
- Gemini will deal with knowledge, not actions, in the core.

Apple is said to be gunning for a hybrid design. Local processing of some of Siri’s on-device capabilities, like setting alarms, sending messages or controlling an app, would persist. Gemini will mainly intervene in:
- World-knowledge questions
- Conversational explanations
- Emotional or nuanced queries
Instead of displaying a bunch of search links, Siri will display direct, conversational answers—just like ChatGPT, or indeed Gemini itself (but couched in Apple’s terms).
More human, more conversational Siri
One source told the outlet that when Gemini powers Siri, it will offer you “more in-depth conversational responses”. This implies that Apple is aiming for a significant improvement in the way Siri talks, thinks and tells you things — not just a faster answer, but a better one.
Apple remains in control
The main thing to remember is that Apple isn’t selling Siri to Google. You’re borrowing Gemini’s brainpower while maintaining full control over personality, behaviour and user experience.
Apple might not even publicly disclose where Gemini is deployed. For the user, it will just seem that Siri got a lot smarter.
What this means going forward
If it’s true, Gemini won’t supplant Siri—instead, it might subtly reinforce it. Apple receives best-in-class AI reasoning without ceding control/branding/privacy positioning.
For consumers, that could translate to a Siri that at long last feels up-to-date, conversational and actually useful — without resembling a Google product in an Apple logo.
The true test will arrive when Apple begins shipping Gemini-powered Siri. But for now, it’s evident that Apple plans to stay at the helm.
