Keeping track of dozens of comments on a shared Google Doc can quickly become overwhelming, especially when multiple people are editing the same file. Google is hoping to solve that with a new Gemini powered update that takes care of the heavy lifting.

The latest update lets Gemini read through comment threads and turn long discussions into short summaries, so users don't have to scroll through every reply to understand what has been discussed. It can also pick out recurring feedback and flag comments that are still waiting for a response.

If replying to every comment feels like a chore, Gemini can help there too. The AI is now able to draft replies that users can review before posting. It can also read the document itself and leave comments during the review process, making it useful for those collaborating on reports, presentations or shared projects.

Google is also giving Gemini the ability to turn feedback into actual document changes. After going through reviewer comments, the AI can suggest edits to the document. Nothing is applied automatically, though. Users remain in control and can decide whether to accept, modify or ignore the suggested changes.

The new tools are available through the Gemini side panel as well as the prompt bar inside Google Docs. Google has also added a few smart shortcuts. For example, opening a document with several comments may prompt Gemini to generate a quick summary, while selecting a comment thread can bring up an option to draft a reply instantly.

The rollout has already started, although Google says it could take up to 15 days before the feature reaches everyone. It is available to users with edit access and will be offered to Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus and Education Plus customers. Google AI Pro for Education users, along with Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers, are also included in the rollout.
