A humanoid robot going by the name of Figure 03 is catching all the buzz on the internet after it accompanied the US's First Lady Melania Trump on a walk at the White House. The exotic experience took place at the Fostering the Future Together summit, and the humanoid robot's presence went in sync with the theme of the event. As Melania entered the summit, the humanoid robot shared the red carpet with her, greeting and speaking in multiple languages with guests, taking the limelight at the event.
The humanoid robot is made by a company called Figure, and its appearance at the summit points to a very important fact: artificial intelligence is no longer just a thing for smartphones, laptops and other handheld devices but is quietly making its way into robotics as well, trying to mimic humans as closely as possible with real-time application in our physical world. First Lady Melania Trump, at the summit, expressed that in the future humanoid robots of such sorts could assist in classrooms as intelligent tutors, adapting to students' pace and learning at an individual level, responding to the students' emotional reactions. The message here was clear: AI is being developed into something big that will interact with us in our daily lives every day. But big questions still remain in my opinion, like what happens to the job market in the industries mentioned above, and can a robot replace an actual human being with original emotional intelligence, capacity and understanding?
What Is A Humanoid Robot?
Figure AI has introduced its newest humanoid robot, Figure 03, marking the third iteration of its general-purpose robotics platform. This one, unlike the earlier versions which were mostly restricted to research environments or industrial settings, is being designed with practical use in mind. The idea here is to go beyond the lab setting and eventually have robots which could assist in everyday life, which could be at home, in offices, or in shared public spaces, all while learning directly from humans.
At the core of Figure 03 is the company’s Helix AI system, a vision-language action model built specifically for humanoid machines. Instead of relying on programming, the robot is able to interpret what it is seeing, hear and follow instructions, and respond instantly. According to the figure, the ability of the robot to pick up tasks through interaction with the environment, identify objects in the environment, and respond accordingly in new situations is what makes the robot different from other robots.
What Can Figure 03 Do?
This humanoid robot comes with enhanced vision and sensing systems, which are its latest highlight. The amped-up visual system gives the robot a better and wider field of view and faster response time, making the robot much more capable of dodging obstacles in its way naturally. The hands of the robot are also equipped with built-in cameras and touch sensors, so it can maintain grip and take objects with ease when required, which makes handling delicate items easier compared to previous versions of humanoid robots.
Safety is always a concern with such things, and the company claims that this has been kept in mind while designing. Keeping real-world use in mind, the robot uses softer materials along with protective padding, so it can operate around people without posing a risk. It is also more compact and lighter than its predecessor, which should make it easier to navigate tighter spaces like homes or busy environments.
On the interaction side, the company has focused on making communication feel more natural. The robot comes with upgraded speakers and microphones to handle voice conversations better, and it also supports wireless charging, allowing it to power up on its own without needing to be plugged in.

Large-Scale Production On The Anvil
The company has also highlighted that the robot is slated for large-scale production. Earlier the expense of making a humanoid robot made it less feasible for mass production, but the company has expressed that it has designed the robot, keeping mass manufacturing in mind. The company says that it has the robot has gone through a hardware redesign and several parts and functions have been simplified so that it's fit for large-scale production at lower costs.
This also means that companies are preparing for large-scale humanoid production that could be utilised across industries. With companies racing towards mass scaling of the robots and world leaders touting its usage in various industries in the future, one must ask what happens to human experience and workers in the industries that these robots might replace in the future.
