OnePlus is all set to bring in an upgrade to the R series with the launch of the OnePlus 15R on December 16 in India. The R series, over the years, has enjoyed a niche for its near-flagship level performance at a more accessible level than OnePlus' core premium models. And with the new release, all eyes are set on how the OnePlus 15R fares compared to its predecessor-the OnePlus 13R.

Changes in Design and Durability

The OnePlus 15R brings a refreshingly different design language. Gone is the round camera module of the OnePlus 13R, replaced with a square-shaped camera housing reminiscent of the OnePlus 15's design. The flat metal frame of the phone also gives it a more premium and modern look.

Durability is where the difference becomes more pronounced: The OnePlus 15R is tipped to offer significantly higher protection with IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings, a fair bump over the OnePlus 13R, which was limited to an IP65 rating.

A new action key experience

Another prominent addition is the Action Key, which is customisable. Much like it was done on the OnePlus 15, this button can be assigned shortcuts to execute certain tasks. One of the touted uses is instant access to Mind Space, a feature supported by AI to capture, organise, and recall information efficiently.

Performance Expectations

Performance is expected to take center stage. Rumours say the OnePlus 15R could be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset for a decent jump over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 inside the OnePlus 13R. If true, this would equate to improved performance and efficiency, along with stronger sustained output.

Display Upgrades

The display could get meaningful upgrades, too. The OnePlus 15R is expected to boast a 6.7-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel with a higher refresh rate of 165Hz.For comparison, the OnePlus 13R has a 6.78-inch AMOLED display that tops out at 120Hz, which makes the newer model more alluring if you want silky-smooth visuals.

Battery and Charging

One of the biggest upgrades might be in battery capacity. While the OnePlus 13R comes with a 6,000mAh battery supporting 80W wired charging, the possible leaks indicate that the OnePlus 15R may feature an 7,400 mAh battery with as much as 100W wired and 50W wireless charging support.

Camera Adjustments

Camera hardware could move in a different direction. While the OnePlus 13R supports a triple-camera setup, the OnePlus 15R is tipped to come with a dual-camera system consisting of a 50MP main sensor and a 50MP ultrawide lens in India. It seems like, as the launch day is drawing near, the OnePlus 15R is all set to focus less on minor refinements and more on meaningful generational changes, at least when it comes to durability, performance, and battery life.
