Google has never been shy about experimenting with artificial intelligence, whether it is testing AI-generated podcasts in Search or weaving Gemini deeper into Chrome. Its latest experiment takes a different route altogether. The company has quietly introduced a Gemini-powered tool called Disco, designed to turn ordinary browser tabs into interactive web apps.
Turning Tabs Into Web Apps
At the core of Disco is a feature called GenTabs. The idea is simple but ambitious. A user selects an existing browser tab and asks Disco to convert it into a web app. The AI then restructures the content into a clean, interactive interface that brings together information, visuals and tools drawn directly from the original webpage.

Rather than presenting static text, Disco can add interactive elements that visually explain concepts, organise data or guide users through complex topics. The final presentation depends heavily on how the user prompts the AI, allowing a degree of customisation in how information is displayed and explored.
Examples Google Is Showcasing
Google shared several examples to demonstrate what Disco can do. In one case, a webpage explaining entropy was transformed into a web app that visually represented what entropy looks like in practice. The app also included tools to summarise the information for writing or research purposes.
Another example focused on planning a winter trip. Disco’s generated app combined destination details, a Google Maps view of the area, calendar integration and an itinerary builder. Locations were pinned directly on the map, creating an interactive planning hub rather than a collection of disconnected tabs.
Google also showcased interactive meal planners and vegetable garden planners, suggesting that Disco could be especially useful for organising projects, trips or daily planning tasks.
A Different Take On AI Browsing
The broader idea behind Disco appears to be merging web research with deeper planning and understanding. Instead of opening dozens of webpages and piecing information together manually, users can generate a single web app that guides them through the material.
This approach sets Disco apart from the current wave of AI browsers. While competitors like Perplexity’s Comet and Microsoft Edge’s Copilot Mode focus on AI-assisted browsing, Google already has Gemini built into Chrome. Disco represents a parallel experiment that rethinks how web content itself can be reshaped by AI.
Early Days For The Platform
Google says Disco is intended to become a broader platform with multiple features over time. GenTabs is only the first step. For now, access is limited, and interested users must join a waitlist. Those approved may also gain early access to future Disco features.
While still experimental, Disco offers a glimpse into how Google may be thinking beyond traditional search and browsing, using AI to turn information into something far more interactive and useful.
