Brown University Shooting: A shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, left two students dead and at least nine others injured, triggering a massive police operation and a campus-wide lockdown as authorities hunt for the suspect. The gunman opened fire on Saturday inside a first-floor classroom in the Barus and Holley building, which houses the Ivy League school’s engineering and physics departments.
Officials said the attacker used a handgun. Emergency responders rushed the injured to Rhode Island Hospital, where one victim remains in critical condition, six are described as critical but stable, and two others suffered less severe injuries.
Police Rescue Students Hiding In Library
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Providence police officers rescued petrified students who had barricaded themselves inside classrooms and a campus library to escape the gunfire. Video footage shared by local media showed officers escorting students to safety as parts of the campus were placed under lockdown.
Brown University issued emergency alerts instructing students and staff to remain in their rooms. Several surrounding neighbourhoods were also placed under strict security measures as police worked to secure the area.
CCTV Shows Suspect Walking Away From Campus
At a late-night press conference, Providence Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara said investigators released surveillance footage showing a man believed to be the shooter leaving the area shortly after the attack. The CCTV video shows the suspect calmly walking onto Hope Street and then turning right onto Waterman Street.
The man is seen dressed head-to-toe in black and appears to be wearing either a hood or a face covering that obscures his face. Witnesses told police he may have been wearing a grey camouflage-style mask. Authorities estimate the suspect is in his 30s, but his identity and motive remain unknown.
Massive Manhunt Under Way In Providence
O’Hara said shell casings were recovered from the scene, though investigators are not prepared to release additional forensic details. A heavy police presence remains across Providence, with armed officers deployed in and around the university as part of a large-scale manhunt.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and to report any information that could help locate the suspect. Officials warned that the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.
