The GhaziabadMunicipal Corporation has handed over 40,000 sq ft of land to the Jal Nigam for the construction of a 140 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) under the Namami Gange project. The plot, located near the New Link Road flyover, will enable the treatment of wastewater from seven major drains before it reaches the Harnandi River.
The Jal Nigam had been awaiting land allocation since completing the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Officials said the new STP will significantly benefit residents troubled by polluted drains and will help ensure cleaner water during festive events like Chhath Puja.

Earlier this year, water samples collected near Chhijarsi Cut, Hindon Pushta Marg, and Karhera showed reduced oxygen levels, reaffirming the river’s status among the country’s most polluted. Drains from Vijay Nagar, Sai Upvan, Sahibabad, and Nandgram continue to pollute the Harnandi, with foul odour and negligible aquatic life reported.
Under the approved plan, Rs 380 crore will be spent on constructing the 140 MLD STP and tapping the drains, while an additional Rs 630 crore will go towards construction and 15-year maintenance. With land acquisition complete, officials expect project execution to accelerate.

The need for an STP was first highlighted in a 2010 High Court order, but the work stalled due to land unavailability. The corporation has now identified and transferred the required land near the Biodiversity Park.
“The Jal Nigam will construct a 140 MLD STP on the allotted land to treat the city’s sewage water,” said KP Anand, General Manager, Jal Kal.
