Prayagraj is set to get a major infrastructure boost with a new six-lane bridge at Phaphamau. It will be the longest six-lane bridge in Uttar Pradesh once completed. The project is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity across the Ganga, and support smoother movement of people and goods.
Snapshots of the bridge were shared on social media by a user, detailing the scale of the project. “Spectacular views of UP’s longest 6-lane cable bridge built over river Ganga in Prayagraj – another lovely feather in UP’s cap," the user wrote.

Phaphamau Six-Lane Bridge: Details

  • Cost: 1,948 crores. The project is built under the EPC model of the NHAI.
  • The bridge will be opened to the public in September 2026.
  • Initially, the project was scheduled to be completed by February 2024, before the Maha Kumbh 2025.
  • However, due to natural calamities, particularly the flooding in the Ganga during the monsoon, the project has been delayed repeatedly.
  • The new six-lane bridge is built to handle a traffic volume of over 40,000 cars per day, thereby easing congestion over the existing two-lane bridge, also called the Chandrashekhar Azad Setu, which has a capacity of only 15,000 cars per day.
  • Once completed, the new bridge is anticipated to become the gateway for the city’s core arterial network, connecting important routes such as NH-96, NH-24B, and AH-1.
  • This will also link Prayagraj to other satellite cities like Lucknow and Pratapgarh.
  • The 9.9 km Phaphamau bridge project is built in the extradosed style and consists of a 3.84 km main span, while the remaining 6.06 km consists of high-capacity approach roads to manage the heavy traffic.

What Are Extradosed Bridges?

Extradosed bridges are a hybrid structural form that combines elements of both a post-tensioned box girder bridge and a cable-stayed bridge. Visually, they resemble cable-stayed bridges but are distinguished by significantly shorter towers (pylons) and cables that intersect the deck at a shallower angle. The upcoming bridge in Phaphamau will be the first extradosed bridge in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
