Loco pilots in Raebareli will soon be able to receive urgent messages from their family members while on duty, thanks to a new departmental initiative. The department is working on a framework that will allow family members to send important messages to loco pilots through a dedicated helpline number.
Currently, loco pilots are not permitted to carry mobile phones during train operations, which often prevents their families from reaching them, especially during emergencies. This new system aims to address this challenge.
Under the plan, when a message needs to be conveyed to a loco pilot, family members will contact the control room via a special phone facility in case of an emergency. The control room will then relay the message to the loco pilot using a walkie-talkie.
A unique helpline number will be issued to both the loco pilots and their families for this service. To ensure timely and accurate delivery, the system will use data related to the loco pilot’s duty schedule and current location. This will allow the control room to identify the right person and ensure the message reaches the pilot without delay.
Once the message is recorded in the control room, the station master or control officer at the next station will personally ensure that the message is delivered to the loco pilot.
This new communication system is expected to be a valuable tool for loco pilots and their families, especially in emergency situations. SM Sharma, the Divisional Railway Manager of Northern Railway, Lucknow, emphasised that this initiative will make it easier for important messages to be communicated effectively while the loco pilots remain on their duties.
