UP Weather: As December sets in, cold weather conditions have intensified across Uttar Pradesh, with dense fog disrupting normal life in several regions on Monday. Extremely low visibility during the morning hours slowed traffic movement, with vehicle speeds significantly reduced on major roads.

In many areas, visibility dropped to less than five metres, creating difficulties for commuters. According to the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature was recorded at 12 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature could reach up to 26 degrees Celsius across the entire state, including Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Meerut, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur.

India generally experiences a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions in different parts throughout the year. In winter, temperatures in the hilly regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim, drop below zero. In summer, temperatures in the plains can reach 45-50 degrees. In coastal areas, including the southern states, the temperature remains between approximately 15 and 30 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

Fog was also observed on Monday morning in several districts of Purvanchal, Uttar Pradesh, including Gorakhpur, which could also affect the weather during the day. In Deoria and Basti, fog is forecast in the morning with clear weather expected during the day.

With the fluctuations in the weather, illnesses have also started to appear. Children and the elderly, in particular, often face specific problems, including coughs, colds, respiratory issues, and skin problems during the cold season. The number of such patients in hospital outpatient departments (OPDs) has started to increase.

According to Dr Sunil Kumar, it is essential to follow a balanced diet and lifestyle to avoid seasonal diseases. The habit of sleeping early at night and waking up early in the morning is necessary for better health. In addition, one should also get regular full-body medical check-ups.

CMO Dr YK Rai stated that during the cold, one should consume foods with a warming effect (garam taseer) such as millet (bajra), sorghum (jowar), almonds, ghee, and jaggery (gud). He explained that what appears to be a common problem can sometimes take a serious turn, and if not attended to in time, the infection can reach the lungs of patients already suffering from asthma and respiratory ailments, causing difficulties for the patient.
