The controversy surrounding the world-famous religious and historical Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, held in the high Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, is deepening. This Yatra, which takes place every 12 years, is proposed for 2026. However, strong opposition has emerged in the Kumaon division following a unilateral decision by the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Committee of Nauti (Garhwal) to announce its organisation in 2027 instead.
Objection From The Chand Dynasty
Narendra Chand Raj Singh, the Yuvraj (Crown Prince) of the Chand dynasty of Kumaon, has clearly stated that since ancient times, the Nanda Raj Jat Yatra has been conducted with the equal participation of the kings of Kumaon and Garhwal. The Chand kings of Kumaon and the Kunwars of Kansuwa have always played equal roles in the event. He asserted that taking such a decision without consulting the Nanda Raj Jat Committee of Kumaon is not only improper but also hurts the religious sentiments of lakhs of devotees.
Significance Of The Tradition
He emphasised that this Yatra is linked to the mythological tradition of bidding farewell to Maa Nanda for her in-laws' abode (Homkund), holding deep religious and historical significance. According to tradition, the pilgrimage has always been organised from Nauti in Garhwal and Almora in Kumaon. He argued that altering the prescribed 12-year cycle would send a wrong message to future generations.
Warning And Demand For Government Intervention
Narendra Chand Raj Singh warned that if a decision is not reached through consensus, the Nanda Raj Jat Yatra will be organised from the Kumaon division in 2026, respecting public sentiment. He demanded that the state government convene an immediate meeting to resolve the matter and appealed to the Nauti committee to organise the Yatra in 2026, in accordance with tradition.
