Jay Shetty ‘Monk’ Controversy: Even people who have never, in their entire lives, taken a single piece of advice from a life coach, know who Jay Shetty is. In fact, the man built his name to the level where he eventually turned into quite a celebrity. So much so that it was Shetty who officiated the wedding of Hollywood actors Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck in 2022. However, the entire ‘Shetty’ empire came crumbling down four days ago, after a report by The Guardian went viral on social media. So, what exactly happened that changed the course of time so drastically that the internet is now witnessing endless reactions of people ‘celebrating’ the downfall of a ‘monk’? Let’s take a look. But before that, let’s know a bit more about Jay Shetty.
Who Is Jay Shetty?
Jay Shetty is a British-Indian, who was also known to be quite a ‘monk’ around the world. The 36-year-old author, life coach, and podcaster was famous not only in the UK but in India and Bollywood as well. With a meditation start-up that was reportedly worth billions, the man also wrote two bestselling books; Think Like a Monk and 8 Rules of Love. But what caused this success to begin with? Why did he, so effortlessly, associate himself with a ‘monklife’? Well, everything has to do with him ‘living with monks’ in India for three years, or that’s what he at least claimed.
Jay Shetty: The ‘Monk’
Jay’s social media fame began to rise almost a decade ago, in 2016, with his social media videos and content that spoke heavily about ‘living’ and was full of ‘life coach’ energy. The man, to add further weight to his profile, claimed that he spent three years of his life at a Hindu temple in India. The said decision was taken after Shetty was highly ‘inspired’ after attending a ‘talk by Gauranga Das’, while he was at London’s business school. As per Jay, this ‘spiritual awakening’ led him to follow Das to India to be under him. From his books, and his podcast to his lessons, almost everything had a hint of his ‘learnings’ that he got during the time he was in the temple.
In fact, “During his school years, Jay Shetty spent vacations living with monks in India, immersing himself in their wisdom and teachings,” is what Jay’s official website read. However, almost everything turned out to be a ‘lie’, after The Guardian did an elaborate report on the entire narrative.
The Controversy:
As per the report by The Guardian, Jay's story did not exactly add up. From his dates to the years during which he claimed to be in India, did not sit well as per interactions with Shetty’s former lover and Das’ team itself. Apart from these sources, Shetty’s story and his inconsistency in the ages that he mentioned for different occasions did not add up as well. Some people, known to Jay, also claimed that the man spent some time at his London estate, Bhaktivedanta Manor, and not in India, as he claimed.
The entire ‘exposure’ dropped like a bomb on Jay and the rest. As soon as the reports went viral, people began to react to it. Some expressed concerns over the matter, while the rest took a further dig at the ‘monk’ for being a ‘fake’ to begin with.
“It's so funny that the western world needed an article to figure out that Jay Shetty was a fraud like what part of him screamed he was legit???? Anyone who calls themselves a "life coach" or a "spiritual guru" is a fraud, end of,” a user said.
“LOL. Been waiting for this day. Obviously @jayshetty is a scam artist and a snake oil salesmen. Honestly when I see people who follow him on instagram non-ironically, I immediately loose respect for them and their intelligence (or lack thereof),” added a second person.
“What Else You were Expecting from a Life Coach ? #JayShetty,” added a third user.
“The way I was always waiting for Jay Shetty to get exposed. I knew he was a scam!!!!” said a fourth.
