In a striking set of findings, a US report references unidentified aerial sightings over multiple Indian territories. Newly declassified US government documents have drawn attention to a series of unexplained aerial sightings reported over parts of India and its neighbouring regions in 1968.
The report released as part of a broader set of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) records includes historical intelligence files, photographs, audio logs, and field reports compiled over decades by agencies such as the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the United States Department of Defence.
The report highlights multiple reported sightings across the Himalayan region, particularly in India’s northern frontier areas, including Sikkim and Ladakh.
Were there any sightings reported?
One of the earliest cases cited occurred on February 19, 1968, when residents across several locations in north Sikkim including Lachung, Lachen, Trangu, Muguthang, and Chholhamu were reported seeing a fast-moving object crossing the sky from northeast to southwest.
Witnesses also described a bright light trailing behind the object that illuminated the surrounding terrain. Moreover, a loud, thunder-like sound was also reportedly heard shortly after the event.
The records also describe several incidents in Ladakh during March 1968. On March 4, observers in the Chang La, Fukche, and Koyul regions reportedly observed a bright white light travelling from east to west. The report notes that two loud explosive sounds were heard before a reddish glow and white smoke became visible.

On the same day near Ane La, another report described an object moving in a circular pattern while leaving behind a smoke trail.
Later, on March 25, residents of Fukche, Koyul, and Demchok reported a rocket-like object crossing the sky. Witnesses stated it left a long white-yellow trail and appeared to be flying at high altitude, estimated between 20,000 and 25,000 feet.
Reported incident in Nepal
The declassified files also mention a related sighting in nearby Nepal on March 27, 1968.
Witnesses in the Kaski District reported observing a bright object moving rapidly from north to south, flashing intermittently and producing loud noise. The document also notes a claim that a metallic, disc-shaped object was later discovered in a crater near Baltichaur, close to Pokhara.
The object was described as roughly six feet wide at its base and about four feet tall.
The release of these records is part of an ongoing US effort to make historical UAP-related files publicly available.
At the same time, US officials have cautioned against drawing definitive conclusions from the material. The United States Department of Defence has noted that many records lack fully verified documentation and that previous investigations have found no confirmed evidence linking such sightings to extraterrestrial technology or alien life.
