US-Iran Talks: The indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States over Tehran’s nuclear program and the US’s economic sanctions on Iran have made ‘significant progress’ in the latest round of talks in Geneva, but the agreement between the parties to avoid war is uncertain. Oman is acting as a mediator between the parties.

As per a report by Associated Press, the Foreign Minister of Oman, Badr Albusaidi, stated that both sides have agreed to resume talks ‘soon,’ and the next level of discussion will take place in Vienna.

Albusaidi expressed gratitude to all the concerned parties, including negotiators, the IAEA, and the Swiss government, which is hosting the talks between Iran and the US.

Describing the latest round of negotiation as ‘the most intense and longest rounds’, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who led Tehran’s delegation, said that good progress has been made. He added that the agreement was reached on some issues while differences remain on others. He indicated that the next round of talks will take place in less than a week.

What Happened In Meeting

Iran reportedly dismissed the US’s demand that Tehran completely abandon the plan to pursue the nuclear programme and transfer the country’s 400kg stockpile of enriched uranium abroad. Iran rejected US demands to halt uranium enrichment completely. Iran has also rejected the US demand to discuss the limits of Tehran’s ballistic programme and its alleged support for regional forces, including Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, militias in Iraq, and the Houthis in Yemen. Tehran said that talks will solely focus on the nuclear plan.

It is reported that officials have floated a potential concession, details of which are yet to come out. One reported proposal is that Iran might be allowed to resume limited uranium enrichment after a few years of suspension. In return, Iran has demanded the lifting of economic sanctions on it.

The Iran-US Tensions

The nuclear talk between Iran and the US comes amid escalating diplomatic and military tensions as Trump ordered a major military build-up in the Middle East. The US Army has currently deployed over 12 warships, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the region.
