India's neighbour, Bangladesh is set to get its new government soon, as the voting for general elections are held on Thursday. The election is being held almost 18 months after the dramatic ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following violent protests. The politics of the Asian country has revolved around two parties, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Awami League. Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel laureate who has been heading the interim government, is widely seen as anti-India and often described as more tilted towards Pakistan and China.

Key Factors That May Decide Outcome Of Bangladesh Polls

Indecisive Voters

30-40 per cent of Bangladeshis currently support Awami League, while the larger group remains undecided. These are the two sections of voters in the election.

A November 2025 survey conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI) found that 7 per cent of voters were undecided, while 11 per cent refused to disclose their voting intentions.

In a nationwide survey carried out in December 2025 and published by Prothom Alo in January, about 17 per cent of respondents said they had yet to decide who they would support as the next Prime Minister.

"Opinion polls suggest the BNP has an edge, but we must remember that a significant portion of voters are still undecided," Executive Director at Dhaka's Centre for Governance Studies, Parvez Karim Abbasi, told news agency Reuters.

Voter Turnout

Bangladesh Election Commission’s data has revealed that voters take almost 10 times longer at booths. This could possibly lead to slow movement of the queue and frustration among voters during polling.

Today’s process will take some time as the Bangladeshi voters will be voting for election and the referendum, a report by the Bangladesh Institute of Democracy and Development (BIDD) stated.

Women and senior citizens could play a decisive role in scripting the general election outcome. With voting expected to take longer than usual, there is a possibility that many women and elderly voters may leave before casting their ballots.
