Bondi Beach shooting: Three Indian students were among those injured in the deadly terror attack at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, where gunmen opened fire on crowds gathered for a Hanukkah celebration, Australian media reported on Monday. At least two of the injured Indian nationals are undergoing treatment at a local hospital, according to The Australia Today.

Officials have not yet confirmed the identities of the injured Indian students or disclosed detailed information about their condition, citing an ongoing investigation. The students reportedly sustained gunshot wounds to their legs and thighs. Efforts are underway to notify families, while consular officials are expected to extend assistance to foreign nationals affected by the attack.

Attack Declared Terror Incident

The attack took place near Campbell Parade shortly before 7 pm on Sunday, coinciding with celebrations marking the first night of Hanukkah. Hundreds of people had gathered at the beachfront location when the assailants allegedly opened fire. Police identified the attackers as 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram. The elder Akram, who reportedly held six licensed firearms, was shot dead by police at the scene. His son remains in critical condition under police guard at a hospital.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that the shooting has been officially declared a terrorist attack. Authorities are examining evidence suggesting ideological links to the Islamic State, including material recovered at the scene. “What we know already is that this goes to motive,” Albanese said, stressing that investigators are pursuing all lines of inquiry. Law enforcement agencies are coordinating with international partners to ensure accurate communication with victims’ families and foreign embassies. Support services, including counselling and translation assistance, are being provided to victims, international students and their families. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from circulating unverified information and to respect the privacy of those affected.

Questions Over Intelligence And Police Response

It has been admitted by Australian intelligence authorities that one of the terrorists had already been brought to their notice previously, though he did not pose any immediate threat.
